Grande Prairie Regional Hospital

The Grande Prairie Regional Hospital (GPRH) is a modern, 243-bed acute care facility in Grande Prairie, Alberta. Operated by Alberta Health Services, it replaced the former Queen Elizabeth II (QEII) Hospital as the city’s primary hospital and opened to patients in late 2021.

Key features and services

  • Expansion of services: The GPRH provides a significant expansion of services to residents of Grande Prairie and the surrounding region, which includes parts of northern Alberta, northeastern British Columbia, and northwestern Saskatchewan.
  • Increased capacity: With 243 beds, the new hospital offers a substantial increase in capacity compared to the former QEII Hospital, which had 181 beds.
  • Comprehensive care: The facility includes an emergency department, cancer care center, operating rooms, and critical care units.

  • State-of-the-art facility: The GPRH was built to include modern design and technology, with construction officially completed in June 2021 and patient services commencing in December 2021.
  • Purpose of the QEII Hospital: The old QEII Hospital was repurposed into the QEII Ambulatory Care Centre, which continues to provide some community-based healthcare services.
